Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat will give the 2014 Amos Perlmutter Memorial Lecture, "The Future of the Jews, How Global Forces are Impacting the Jewish People, Israel, and Its Relationship with the United States", also the name of his recent book. Ambasador Eizenstat will present his provocative analysis on how major geopolitical, economic, and security challenges are reshaping the Jewish world and its relationship with the United States. He will also discuss how shifting global power away from the United States and Europe to the emerging powers in Asia and Latin America poses particular challenges for the Jewish community, and raises particular issues for the relationship between Israel and the U.S.
During the evening, the School of Public Affairs will proudly present a student scholarship to honor the the legacy of Professor Emerita Rita Simon.
During a decade and a half of public service in three US administrations, Ambassador Eizenstat held a number of key senior positions, including United States Ambassador to the European Union (1993 to 1996) and United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (1999 to 2001). Ambassador Eizenstat has received seven honorary doctorate degrees from universities and academic institutions. He has been awarded high civilian awards from the governments of France (Legion of Honor), Germany, Austria, and Belgium, as well as from Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers. In 2007, he was named "The Leading Lawyer in International Trade" in Washington, DC by Legal Times. He heads the international practice at Covington and Burling.
Rita Simon was a former dean of the School of Justice and University Professor. She taught at both the School of Public Affairs and at the Law School. Professor Simon was one of the most gifted scholars in our school. She educated generations of students who are now contributing greatly to fields of scholarship to which she first introduced them. And, as recently as this past year, applicants for our master's and doctoral programs were seeking to come to SPA to study under Rita.
Amos Perlmutter, a Washington-based political scientist, author and commentator on Middle Eastern affairs was a beloved professor at AU from 1972 until he died in 2001. He was the author of 15 books and innumerable articles and essays about the Middle East and American foreign and security policies. Topics included strategic studies, military sociology and comparative politics.
