In conversation with Sri Mulyani Indrawati

Sri Mulyani Indrawati is one of Indonesia's longest-serving Ministers of Finance and the first woman to hold the position, having served under three democratically elected presidents. Throughout her tenure, she played a key role in strengthening Indonesia's economic stability, sustaining economic growth, creating employment, and reducing poverty and inequality.

Meet our speaker and chair

Sri Mulyani Indrawati is a former Minister of Finance of Indonesia and the first woman to hold the position, having served under three democratically elected presidents. Prior to and between her ministerial appointments, she held senior positions at international financial institutions, including Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of the World Bank and Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where she represented 12 countries in the East Asia and Pacific region. She currently serves as a member of the Board of the Gates Foundation and is a Blavatnik World Leaders Fellow (2025–26) at the University of Oxford.

Andrés Velasco is Professor of Public Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science and served as the inaugural Dean of the School of Public Policy from 2018 to 2026. Before joining LSE, he was a member of the G20 Eminent Persons Group and co-chaired the Global Panel on the Future of the Multilateral Lending Institutions. He also served on the Global Oceans Commission. A former Chilean presidential candidate, Prof. Velasco was Chile’s Minister of Finance from 2006 to 2010. During his tenure, he earned international recognition for his economic leadership, particularly for establishing Chile’s sovereign wealth fund and managing the country’s copper revenues prudently.

Tony Travers is Professor in Practice in the LSE Department of Government, Interim Dean of the LSE School of Public Policy and Director of LSE London. His key research interests include local and regional government, elections and public service reform. Professor Travers' knowledge is frequently sought by policy makers and he has advised a range of select committees and think tanks. He also provides expert analysis for broadcast and print media, regularly appearing on major television and radio networks.
