ProPublica is pleased to host a convening of doctors, patient safety advocates and other health care professionals to discuss patient harm (estimated as the third-leading cause of death in the United States) and ways to improve health care quality.
ProPublica, a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to investigative journalism in the public interest, has sought greater medical transparency through its Surgeon Scorecard database, an interactive tool that reports the complication rates for surgeons nationwide. For the first time, it lets patients weigh the track records of doctors on common elective procedures – and it has sparked considerable debate in the medical community. This free event, moderated by NPR health writer and editor Scott Hensley, will feature key thought leaders with divergent views on the causes of patient harm and the best ways to improve patient safety.
