Russia is one of the top carbon emitters in the world after China, the United States, and India. Those emissions have begun to have an impact at home, with the country experiencing catastrophic forest fires and permafrost melt. Although the Russian government has promised to become carbon neutral no later than 2060, it remains one of the world’s leading fossil fuel exporters and has dragged its feet on issuing specific plans for emissions reductions. Yet, despite an inhospitable political climate, environmentalists have been launching actions around the country and have also recently published a Green New Deal for Russia.
