The intelligence community has long viewed open source intelligence (OSINT) as a synonym for newspapers, but today’s OSINT looks more like vast amounts of publicly available, granular data, living on an unclassified cloud and analyzed with cutting edge AI/ML applications. The intelligence community can best serve its mission by rapidly adopting these critical technologies, sprinting now to keep pace with advances by competitors like China.
Please join the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) International Security Program on Friday, December 3, 2021, for a virtual discussion on how cloud-based, AI/ML-enabled OSINT will be essential to the intelligence mission and the opportunities and obstacles ahead.
Emily Harding will be joined by Robert Cardillo, former Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), Sean Roche, Director, National Security, Amazon Web Services (AWS) International Public Sector, and Lauren Zabierek, Executive Director of the Cyber Project at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center. This event precedes the publication of an upcoming report on redefining OSINT for the intelligence community.
Robert Cardillo served as the former Director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), from 2014 to 2019. He has held numerous leadership positions, including with the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Sean Roche served as the former Associate Deputy Director of CIA for Digital Innovation, from 2015 to 2019. He has been responsible for missions ranging from R&D to Operations and has held a number of leadership positions across the Directorate for Science and Technology. Lauren Zabierek serves as the Executive Director of the Cyber Project at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center. She previously served as an intelligence officer in the United States Air Force and as a civilian intelligence analyst with the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA) assigned to the Office of Counterterrorism.
