The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored again the importance of effective, life-saving immunization programs. While such programs have thrived in numerous Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) countries, they now face a myriad of challenges. Growing fiscal constraints, unequal access, rising costs, plans to integrate new vaccines or age groups, the lingering fallout of the pandemic, and other challenges are threatening regional health, with potential long-term ramifications.
Looking beyond COVID-19, how can countries restore and strengthen their routine immunization and the overall health system to meet current and future needs? Which existing or innovative financing mechanisms can help mobilize resources necessary for such improvements? What can the public, private, and multilateral sectors do–respectively and collaboratively–to advance these efforts?
