The April 27 attack on members of parliament in Macedonia has focused attention once again on the crisis of democracy in the Western Balkans. Years of institutional paralysis and authoritarian backsliding in countries across the region have created a dilemma for European and American policymakers: continue to preference short-term stability, or invest fully in democratic transformation? Freedom House welcomes experts from the Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group (BiEPAG) for a discussion of the future of the Western Balkans and United States policy in the region.
