His first novel,&nbsp;Buddenbrooks, was published in 1901. In 1929, Mann was recognized with the Nobel Prize for Literature, primarily due to this novel. Mann&rsquo;s other works include&nbsp;The Magic Mountain&nbsp;(Der Zauberberg) in 1924 and&nbsp;Doctor Faustus&nbsp;in 1947. A prolific writer of long fiction, short fiction, lectures, and essays, Mann is considered perhaps the most influential German writer to emerge from the 20th century. After living and working in exile in the United States throughout World War Two, Mann settled in Switzerland in 1952. He lived the rest of his life there, and died in Z&uuml;rich in 1955. His first novel,&nbsp;Buddenbrooks, was published in 1901. In 1929, Mann was recognized with the Nobel Prize for Literature, primarily due to this novel. Mann&rsquo;s other works include&nbsp;The Magic Mountain&nbsp;(Der Zauberberg) in 1924 and&nbsp;Doctor Faustus&nbsp;in 1947. A prolific writer of long fiction, short fiction, lectures, and essays, Mann is considered perhaps the most influential German writer to emerge from the 20th century. Jazz in the Basement is a monthly concert series featuring local jazz artists, organized by the DC Public Library and curated by Bertrand Uberall and John Cook. Not only did the label value their talents, it also gave them a much-needed platform. It Must Schwing! tells the moving story of two friends, united by a passionate love for jazz, and of their profound belief in equality and freedom for every single human being. Rusty Hassan is a radio host on WPFW-FM 89.3 and professor at Georgetown University. Since the late 1950s, his life has revolved around jazz. Featuring a screening of Eric Friedler‘s documentary IT MUST SCHWING! - The Blue Note Story (2018) and a live performance with the Chris Ziemba Quintet, we will spend the afternoon celebrating the jazz label founded by two German-Jewish immigrants in 1939.

From Paris through Marrakech to Fiji and Bonn and Beyond 				 				An evening of reflections on the most recent international meeting in Bonn, the second since Paris and the first since Trump took office. What have we learned? Last November, the twenty-third meeting of the Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change met in Bonn, Germany, with the co-sponsorship of Fiji. This was the second COP meeting since the landmark climate agreement was reached in Paris and the first since Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. For Creating the Paris Path on Climate Change, the Sustainability Collaborative of George Washington University and the Goethe Institut of Washington, DC, have invited Elliot Diringer of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, a representative from the Embassy of Fiji, and Liane Schalatek of the Heinrich Boell Foundation (North America) to discuss the results of the Bonn meeting. In particular, the panelists, who participated in the negotiations themselves, will be asked how the election of Donald Trump affected the negotiations, about the challenges the Trump administration poses for future negotiations, and about the roles American students can play in both the American political process and the international response to climate change. The discussion will be followed by an informal reception. Creating the Paris Path on Climate Change

Many refugees are still on the move to Germany and Europe. People from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Eritrea, Somalia and many other countries ask for protection after traveling long and dangerous escape routes. Deutsch Am Mittag: Das Deutsche Historische Institut

Dr. Naika Foroutan is a political scientist and professor of Social Sciences at Humboldt University Berlin, specializing in Integration Research and Social Policy. She is also Vice-Director of the Berlin Institute for Integration and Migration Research. Naika Foroutan has written her dissertation on inter-cultural dialogues between the West and the Islamic world. Her current work focuses on nation-states changing into countries of immigration and their migration and integration politics. Here she has a strong focus on people with a Muslim background as agents of change. She also works as a freelance analyst for radio and television on topics such as political Islam, politics in the Middle East, migration, integration, hybridity and anti-Muslim racism. Prof. Foroutan is the recipient of many awards and honors. She has been named as one of &ldquo;100 Women of Tomorrow&rdquo; by the initiative Germany - Land of Ideas under the auspices of former Federal President Christian Wulff. Born in Teheran, she is a primary example of an immigrant success story. Her talk showcases the transformation of Germany into a country of immigration, presents figures and statistics on attitudes towards Muslims in Germany and demonstrates how the narrative exclusion of Muslims from the collective German identity can lead to antidemocratic attitudes. This program was made possible by a generous grant through the European Recovery Program &ndash; Transatlantic Encounters.&nbsp;

It was one driven, first and foremost, by the rediscovery of Shakespeare, which allowed German artists and intellectuals to break from the Neoclassicism of the French school and invent their own dramatic canon, inventing what it means to be German at the same time. Focusing on the various ways that leading German thinkers have interpreted Shakespeare’s legacy, this talk will constitute a critical take on the dualistic and mutually reinforcing legacy of Germanic Bardophilia: how Shakespeare gave Germans the ability to tell their own stories, and how, in so doing, they “Germanized” Shakespeare himself. Drew Lichtenberg is Literary Manager and Resident Dramaturg at the Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, D.C., where he has worked as production dramaturg on more than 30 productions over five seasons. With approximately 250,000 acres of vineyards, Germany is one of the smallest of the important wine-producing countries – others include Spain, France and Italy – in central Europe. However, viticulture in Germany has a long tradition, tracing its roots back to Roman times 2,000 years ago. Today there are 13 wine growing regions in Germany. Together, they produce 9.25 mio hectoliter of wine; of that, 4 mio hectoliter is exported to the US. Germany is primarily known in the US for its delicious fruity-sweet and noble-sweet Rieslings. However, 85% of the wines produced in Germany are dry, and the country is also a serious producer of red wine, which comprises 38% of the output. Germany is the world’s leading producer of Riesling and Pinot-Blanc (Weißburgunder), second in the production of Pinot Gris (Grauburgunder), and third for Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). It also has a long-standing passion of sparkling wine, being the world’s second-largest producer and number one consumer. This presentation will give an overview of the 13 wine regions alongside a tasting of three wines showcasing different signature grape varieties of Germany. Annette Schiller has been involved in wine since her student days at the University of Mainz, Germany. A macro-economist by training, for many years she organized high-level international conferences for the World Bank. However, wine has always been an important part of Schiller’s life, and she continually educates herself and takes part in tastings to enrich her knowledge. Six are available in English translation, among them The Invention of Curried Sausage (Die Entdeckung der Currywurst) and In My Brother’s Shadow (Am Beispiel meines Bruders), in which he approached his relationship with his father and brother. Uwe Timm was the youngest son in his family. His brother, 16 years his senior, was a soldier in the Waffen SS and died in Ukraine in 1943. This autobiographical novel is the point of departure for a conversation with Sabine von Mering, Professor of German and Director of Center for German and European Studies, Brandeis University, about Germany’s past in the present. 						<a class='vkzurueck' href='javascript:history.back()'>Back</a>

She has what is often called a “immigration background,” her parents emigrated from Dalmatia in Yugoslavia to Germany in the 1960s. She herself was born in Germany, became a German citizen, and speaks and writes in prominent venues about identity, migration, citizenship, and integration. Her novels carry similar themes and are highly regarded. In 2012, she became the founding Director of the Interkulturelles Zentrum Heidelberg, which has since become a model structure for welcoming and integrating new citizens to Germany and Europe. She holds a degree from Heidelberg University in Political Science, German and American Literature. Her latest book, released in German, is called Made in Germany. What's German in Germany? Ms. Marinić will speak on “The American Dream - A Dream Turned German: Immigration, Integration, and Citizenship in Germany”.
