Founded in 2003, The George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute (HSPI) is a nonpartisan “think and do” tank whose mission is to build bridges between theory and practice to advance homeland security through an interdisciplinary approach. By convening domestic and international policymakers and practitioners at all levels of government, the private and non-profit sectors, and academia, HSPI creates innovative strategies and solutions to current and future threats to the nation.

The George Washington University&#39;s Program on Extremism will release a first-of-its-kind report on Americans recruited to join ISIS on December 1, 2015. The report, entitled&nbsp;ISIS in America: From Retweets to Raqqa&nbsp;will be released at an event featuring Lorenzo Vidino, Director of the Program on Extremism, Seamus Hughes, Deputy Director, Michael Downing, commanding officer of the Counter-Terrorism &amp; Special Operations Bureau at the Los Angeles Police Department, and&nbsp;Ambassador Alberto Fernandez, former Coordinator of the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications (CSCC).&nbsp;The report examines all cases of U.S. persons arrested, indicted, or convicted in the United States for ISIS-related activities. A wide array of legal documents (over 7,000 pages) related to these cases provides empirical evidence for identifying several demographic factors related to the arrested individuals. This section also looks at the cases of other Americans who, while not in the legal system, are known to have engaged in ISIS-inspired behavior.&nbsp;The report also examines various aspects of the ISIS-related mobilization in America. It analyzes the individual motivations of ISIS supporters; the role of the Internet and, in particular, social media, in their radicalization and recruitment processes; whether their radicalization took place in isolation or with other, like-minded individuals; and the degree of their tangible links to ISIS.&nbsp; The report concludes with recommendations to combat ISIS recruitment in the United States.

Drawing on a wide range of sources, including recently declassified government documents, court records, and personal interviews with intelligence and law enforcement officials around the world, Matthew Levitt examines Hezbollah's beginnings, its first violent forays in Lebanon, and then its terrorist activities and criminal enterprises abroad in Europe, the Middle East, South America, Southeast Asia, Africa, and finally in North America. Hezbollah: The Global Footprint of Lebanon's Party of God

State and local fusion centers were established in the years after the attacks of September 11th as a bottom-up response to the need for enhanced state and local connectivity to U.S. federal homeland security and counterterrorism activities. Over the past decade, nearly every state and many major urban areas have established a network of 78 fusion centers, which serve as key nodes for federal, state and local coordination on homeland security and terrorism activities.. Fusion centers also address many critical local and regional public safety issues.The Homeland Security Policy Institute is hosting a policy forum to discuss the roles played by state and local fusion centers, examine the challenges that they face, and look ahead to priorities for the future.The conference will feature keynote remarks by The Honorable Michael T.
