<p>For the past 12 months, global energy markets have been roiled by geopolitical conflict and instability, rising post-COVID demand, and efforts by many developed countries to speed their transition to a less carbon-intensive energy matrix. The United States has not been immune from these phenomena, nor has it been passive in its response. America’s Energy Future

<p>Since its inception in 2003, PEPFAR has transformed the landscape of HIV treatment and prevention. It is estimated that this program, which works to accelerate progress toward achieving HIV and AIDS epidemic control in over 50 countries globally, has saved over 20 million lives, prevented transmission to 5.5 million babies, and enabled countries to surpass UNAIDS’ 90-90-90 treatment targets. PEPFAR has also played a vital role in addressing other global health challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, expanding care to marginalized groups such as adolescent girls and young women, key populations, pregnant people, children, and displaced persons.</p><p>PEPFAR released its new five-year strategy in December 2022, which sets bold priorities in the effort to eliminate HIV and AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. 20 Years of PEPFAR: Past Successes and Future Potential

<p>The negative portrayal of Chiang Kai-shek became a conventional theme in Western historiography. In 2009 Jay Taylor attempted to reverse this perspective, but in his zeal he went too far in trying to overturn almost all criticism previous scholars have levied against Chiang. The speaker Alexander V. Pantsov endeavored to write a balanced and unbiased biography of Chiang, the cunning ruler and the great revolutionary, based not only on Taiwanese, Chinese, and American collections but also on previously unknown Soviet archives.</p><p><strong>Alexander V. Pantsov</strong> is a professor of history and holds the Edward and Mary Catharine Gerhold Chair in the Humanities at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. He has published over 150 scholarly works including twenty books. Among them are <i>The Bolsheviks and the Chinese Revolution1919-1927</i> (Honolulu, HI: University of Hawaii Press, 2000), <i>Mao Zedong: The Real Story</i> (New York: Simon &amp; Schuster, 2012), <i>Deng Xiaoping: A Revolutionary Life</i> (Oxford University Press, 2015), <i>Karl Radek on China: Documents from the Former Secret Soviet Archives </i>(Leiden: Brill, 2021), and <i>The Kremlin’s Chinese Advance Guard: Chinese Students in Soviet Russia: 1917-1940</i> (London: Routledge, 2023).</p>

<p><i>The Ends of Modernization </i>studies the relations between Nicaragua and the United States in the crucial years during and after the Cold War. David Johnson Lee charts the transformation of the ideals of modernization, national autonomy, and planned development as they gave way to human rights protection, neoliberalism, and sustainability. The Ends of Modernization: Nicaragua and the United States in the Cold War Era

<p>Confronting Saddam Hussein is a major new interpretation of George W. Bush’s intervention in Iraq. Often considered the most consequential foreign policy decision of the 21st century, Leffler rejects previous accounts that focus on hawkish advisers, like Cheney and Rumsfeld, and places the president at the center of the decision-making process. Leffler vividly portrays the emotions and anxieties that shaped the thinking of the president after the shocking events of 9/11, and shows how fear, hubris, and power influenced Bush’s approach to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Employing a unique set of personal interviews with dozens of top officials as well as declassified British and American documents and captured Iraqi records, Leffler describes Bush’s motivations empathetically, yet critically assesses his performance and illuminates the reasons for the turbulent, unexpected, tragic aftermath of the invasion. This book reconfigures our understanding of the most important international event of the 21st century – the U.S. invasion of Iraq.</p><p><strong>Melvyn P. Leffler</strong> is Emeritus Professor of American History at The University of Virginia. Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq

<p>The relationship between China and the US is commonly portrayed in terms of geostrategic competition, often leading to pessimistic accounts of international cooperation. This, in turn, glosses over important institutional innovations and joint efforts around shared concerns on climate change and the clean energy transition. As the shift towards renewable energy accelerates demand for transition energy metals, such as lithium, nickel, and rare earths, how will resource consuming regions, including the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Korea, navigate their relationship with China and the larger developing world, which hold these mineral deposits and are likely to exercise sovereign control over natural resource management?</p><p>Political support for renewable energy has undoubtedly increased over the past 10 years, but this has yet to translate into concrete political solutions—not only because of technological limitations in switching to renewables, but also due to increasing conflicts around critical minerals. The Changing Geopolitics of Critical Minerals and the Future of the Clean Energy Transition

<p>At this virtual book event, Dr. Hussain Nadim, a former Wilson Center fellow, will discuss his new&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.routledge.com/Aid-Politics-and-the-War-of-Narratives-in-the-US-Pakistan-Relations-A/Nadim/p/book/9781032019956"><strong>study</strong></a>&nbsp;of aid, politics, and the war of narratives in U.S.-Pakistan relations. Additionally, Nadim will discuss the implications of his findings for US-Pakistan relations, and possible ways forward for the relationship. Causes and Consequences of Russia’s Year of War in Ukraine

<p>The Xi Jinping Administration has made ambitious commitments and investments to reign in domestic greenhouse gas emissions and under its Ecological Red Line initiative also passed new laws and standards to better protect China’s rivers, wetlands and forests. Greening BRI Governance in Southeast Asia, Latin America and Beyond

<p>The Wilson Center’s Middle East Program is honored to host leading women’s rights advocate and former Minister for Women's Affairs in Iran Mahnaz Afkhami at the 2023 Haleh Esfandiari Forum.&nbsp;</p><p>Afkhami launched her journey in activism more than four decades ago. Prior to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, she played a key role in the passage of the progressive 1975 Family Protection Law as Iran’s Minister for Women’s Affairs, founded the Association of Iranian University Women, and served as Secretary General of the Women’s Organization of Iran. <p>Russia’s war in Ukraine has devastated the country’s water and sanitation infrastructure. Civilian water supply and treatment have been exposed to collateral damage, wielded as weapons through targeted attacks, and strained by large population movements and diminished capacity as water operators take up arms to protect their country. <p>The conventional, reductive view depicts George F. Kennan as a grand strategist with some peripheral oddities. By contrast, Kennan A Life between Worlds illuminates a figure wrenched to his core. With a distinctly masculinist perspective and with a belief in Freudian theory as settled science, Kennan believed he had to somehow satisfy both “Eros” and “Civilization.” He had to negotiate between the vitality, art, and creativity supposedly nurtured by sexual freedom, and the discipline, obligation, and tedium mandated by bourgeois order. Another struggle pitted his hatred of Soviet repression against his love for the Russian people and his feeling, at times, more Russian than American. A sui generis thinker, Kennan was a pioneering environmentalist and a critic of industrial production who also had unparalleled insight into the problems of U.S. foreign policy both during and after the Cold War.</p><p><strong>Frank Costigliola</strong> received a BA from Hamilton College in 1968 and a PhD from Cornell in 1973. The author or editor of seven books, including The Kennan Diaries (Norton, 2014), Costigliola has received fellowships from the NEH, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Institute for Advanced Study, and the Norwegian Nobel Institute. He is currently Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor at the University of Connecticut. Favorite books include Gregg Herken, The Georgetown Set (2014) and Beverly Gage, J. Vaccinating the Americas –Lessons from Varicella Vaccination

<p>The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 has led to one of the largest forced displacements since the Second World War. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.unhcr.org/en-us/ukraine-emergency.html"><strong>UNHCR estimates</strong></a> that more than 7.8 million Ukrainian refugees have fled to the neighboring countries and over 6.5 million people are internally displaced. The European Union and U.S. have responded with an unprecedented solidarity by providing emergency humanitarian aid and warm hospitality to the Ukrainian refugees. But as the war drags on, it raises the difficult question of how to sustain the international goodwill and long-term support for the refugees in the months or years ahead.</p><p>On the one year anniversary of this war, the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.wilsoncenter.org/RAFDI"><strong>Refugee and Forced Displacement Initiative (RAFDI)</strong></a> will host a public event on <strong>February 1, 2023</strong> at <strong>10:00 am ET</strong>. The event will discuss challenges in responding to the humanitarian situation of this scale, roles of various stakeholders in addressing the urgent and long-term needs of the displaced people, and lessons learnt from the European Union and U.S. response to forced displacement.</p>
