The event will present the results of new research conducted by Dr. Reem Abdel Haliem, Mr. Kareem Ibrahim, and Dr. Diane Singerman through TADAMUN: The Cairo Urban Solidarity Initiative, a Cairo-based initiative that works with citizens to claim their urban rights and devise new urban policies that are more effective, equitable, participatory, and sustainable. TADAMUN’s latest work is a spatial analysis of urban inequality that explores issues of investment patterns; in-new cities and older areas of Cario, planning paradigms, poverty, and the distribution of public funds. The presentation will use maps as a visual tool for understanding development gaps and public policy challenges in contemporary Egypt.&nbsp;

He will also discuss how shifting global power away from the United States and Europe to the emerging powers in Asia and Latin America poses particular challenges for the Jewish community, and raises particular issues for the relationship between Israel and the U.S.&nbsp; During the evening, the School of Public Affairs will proudly present a student scholarship to honor the the legacy of Professor Emerita Rita Simon.&nbsp;During a decade and a half of public service in three US administrations, Ambassador Eizenstat held a number of key senior positions, including United States Ambassador to the European Union (1993 to 1996) and United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (1999 to 2001). Ambassador Eizenstat has received seven honorary doctorate degrees from universities and academic institutions. He has been awarded high civilian awards from the governments of France (Legion of Honor), Germany, Austria, and Belgium, as well as from Secretary of State Warren Christopher, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Secretary of the Treasury Lawrence Summers. In 2007, he was named &quot;The Leading Lawyer in International Trade&quot; in Washington, DC by Legal Times. He heads the international practice at Covington and Burling.&nbsp; Rita Simon was a former dean of the School of Justice and University Professor. &nbsp;She taught at both the School of Public Affairs and at the Law School. Professor Simon was one of the most gifted scholars in our school. She educated generations of students who are now contributing greatly to fields of scholarship to which she first introduced them. &nbsp;And, as recently as this past year, applicants for our master&#39;s and doctoral programs were seeking to come to SPA to study under Rita.&nbsp; Amos Perlmutter, a Washington-based political scientist, author and commentator on Middle Eastern affairs was a beloved professor at AU from 1972 until he died in 2001.
